The Grief Nest
Tending to our grief
As human beings, we have moved far away from the practice of bringing our grief to the altar. We have been taught to hide it, intellectualize it, rush through it, or carry it alone. At Root Mother, we believe that unprocessed grief and stagnant emotion are like a river that has been dammed. When grief is not given movement, witness, or ritual, there is a greater potential for us to remain inside of experiences for far longer than we have to.
Something begins to change when it is truly witnessed. Even through the principles of physics, we understand that observation changes what is being observed. In the same way, when the hidden parts of our inner world are met with presence rather than judgment, they are finally given the conditions they need to transform.
At Root Mother, ritual grief work is a ceremonial process of initiation woven together with shadow work, folk herbalism, plant spirit medicine, and inner landscape journeying.
These are practices of remembrance, practices that have carried human beings through loss, death, transition, rupture, and rebirth across time.
Grief is a great time traveler. It can carry us back to the moments when parts of ourselves became frozen, fragmented, abandoned, or lost. Through ritual, we return not to remain in the past, but to alchemize what happened, make peace with what cannot be changed, and call the lost parts of ourselves home.
Through guided inner landscape journeys, we invite the plantcestors to walk beside us. Plants have co-evolved with human beings for millennia. They are sentient beings that have accompanied us through birth, death, illness, heartbreak, ceremony, and transformation.
Within this work, the plants may help us open what has closed, soften what has hardened, dissolve emotional calcification, and bring movement to grief that has been buried or held in stillness.
This is not about forcing grief to disappear. It is about giving grief an altar, a witness, a language, and a sacred place to move. It is about remembering that grief was never meant to be carried alone and that, when tended with care, it can become a doorway into reconciliation, liberation, and the return to ourselves.

"I've been enjoying using a yoni steam (I made one about a week after we spoke). It's helped create a safe and nurturing ritual to celebrate and give thanks to all that my body does.
Mugwort has felt like a crone/child spirit that has helped me to confront my past womb traumas. I've felt this presence of a healing crone woman who guides me to confront the importance of solid boundaries, and a child-like presence that brings delight and celebration of the sacredness of the body.
This session was much needed. It offered an opportunity to confront some much needed healing that otherwise I don't know if I would have confronted. And the use of mugwort, the yoni steam, rose, has brought comfort and wisdom along the path.
Thank you for doing what you do!"
